The Admissions Register for the Reformatory Hulk - Fitzjames shows William aged 11 (32/84) and his brother John , aged 9 (33/84) were sentenced on 1st December 1884 to 12 months on the hulk for stealing two rabbits valued at 2/6 from Mr McCann of Port Adelaide. They were transferred to the Industrial School on 17th December. Their stepfather, William Thorne, was ordered to pay maintenance of 2shillings and sixpence for each child per week. They were living at Woodville at the time. (GRG29/110)

The Fitzjames was built as a wooden 3 masted ship in 1852 in Canada and sold to Pilkington and partners in England. She was 1307 gross tons, 186.0 feet long, 32.5 feet wide and had a depth of 22.7 feet. She was part of the White Star line and made several trips to Australia carrying emigrants. On 20 January 1866 on her way from Liverpool to Melbourne she sprang a leak and put into Lisbon for repairs. On arrival in Melbourne she was considered unseaworthy and duly condemned and hulked. The South Australian Government bought the hulk in 1876 for use as a quarantine ship and in 1880 the Fitzjames became a floating reformatory for neglected and delinquent children. The Destitute Board took control of the vessel and anchored it off Largs Bay marking the seaward end of the Port Adelaide channel.

When the first big storm hit, The Destitute Board realized that it had inherited a leaking, rotting vessel with ongoing repairs needed. Pumping was essential to keep the boat afloat and it was reported to be so wet below decks that bedding was often ruined. When storms hit, the vessel strained at its moorings and it was towed into the Port to have its leaks stopped. In more settled weather it was towed out again and anchored off Largs or Semaphore. It was replaced in 1891by a land based Reformatory at Magill. The Fitzjames was eventually towed through the Jervois bridge, beached and moored at the end of the Cable Company wharf, and left to break up.

On 29th November 1886 a "Mandate for a convicted child to be sent to a Reformatory School" was issued at Port Adelaide for John Munn, aged 11, to be sent to the Reformatory Hulk (24/86) at Largs Bay for the term of 4 years and 7 months until his 16th birthday as an uncontrollable child (GRG 29/121 Unit 37) (749). The papers show John as the stepson of William Thorne and Elizabeth Ann Thorne of Dale St., Port Adelaide. William Thorne represented that he was unable to control John. The records shows William Thorne was required to pay 2 shillings and sixpence per week for the John's maintenance. Records in 1889 show only 5 pounds of the total maintenance had been paid.

South Australian State Government Records show that John was "boarded out" (GRG 27/5 Unit 4 Page 137c)

The Admissions register for the Fitzjames (no.24 of 1886) shows John was placed with a William Hoy, who was a lightkeeper at Port Pirie, on 17th July 1889. John's was aged 13 years and 8mths at the time. The record shows he was "sentenced to 16" as an uncontrollable child. John was transferred to the care of Mr Charles Patterson at Port Pirie West on the 9th December 1889 (aged 14years and 1 month). Mr Hoy had given up the light beacon.

John built his house 53 Pirie Street, Solomontown. The house was a four roomed cottage with weatherboard cladding. In the early days the floors were packed earth. As the family grew, a "lean to" was added. There was no bathroom. Water heated on the wood stove was poured into a tub on the kitchen floor when a bath was required. John and and Charlotte were still living there when Charlotte died in 1947.

Several of John's grandchildren remembered being told that John would take the horse and buggy to the hotel on pay day and would enjoy himself and climb aboard the sulky. The horse, named Polly, would take him home and his wife would help him off the sulky and put John and Polly to bed.
