Adam Internet and the Variety Bash 2007
Variety History
It all started in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 1927 when a group of 11 young actors working in the Sheridan Theatre formed a social club they called 'Variety'.
On Christmas Eve in 1928, at a party in the theatre, a baby girl was found abandoned in the stalls.
Attached to the blanket in which she was wrapped was the following note:
'Please take care of my baby. Her name is Catherine. I can no longer take care of her. I have eight others. She was born on Thanksgiving Day. I have always heard of the goodness of show business people and I pray to God you will take care of her.
Signed: A heartbroken mother'
The child was named Catherine Variety Sheridan and she became the inspiration to help children everywhere. Catherine visited Australia for Gold Heart Day in 1994 and sadly passed away later that year.
The South Australian Story
The Variety Club began in South Australia in 1983 as a regional branch office, when radio broadcaster Jeremy Cordeaux chaired the initial meetings in an Adelaide nightclub.
In 1996 at the Variety Clubs International Convention in Las Vegas, the Variety Club of South Australia received its International Charter as Tent 75. The Variety Club has since changed its name and is currently known as Variety - The Children's Charity.
Variety is a membership organisation. People from the world of entertainment, sport and business volunteer their time, talent and skills to raise funds for the Variety Children's Charity, thereby assisting children who are sick, disabled or otherwise disadvantaged. All monies are spent in the state in which they are raised.
Tent 75 is a member of the Association of Variety of Australia that comprises all seven states. Each has their own Crew (Board of Directors), membership and fundraising calendar.
Variety is spread through 14 countries across the globe, with the South Australian Variety among the top ten performing in the world.
Since its inception in 1983, the South Australian Variety has raised in excess $21 million net, with all money raised in South Australia spent on South Australia's special children.
In the last financial year over 200 separate grants have been approved totaling $2.4 million.
