What is this WWW? 17 Dec 2001
You probably already know that WWW stands for World Wide Web. What you may not know is that this is only one of the components that makes up the Internet itself. Other components include:
  1. E-mail: allows you to send text messages with attachments to anyone in the world with an email address;
  2. FTP: The File Transfer Protocol, used for downloading files;
  3. Usenet: a group of bulletin boards called newsgroups that you can subscribe to according to the subjects you are interested in.
  4. Gopher: an ancestor to the world wide web that uses a system of menus to access articles of interest.
The main Internet features that you will use are the World Wide Web and E-mail. You may use FTP as well, however your browser does this automatically and you won’t even notice.
