About Us
Birth Matters was established in 1999 by a group of 4 women who felt there was a need for an independent group to provide accurate, well-researched and up-to-date information to prospective parents and new parents to enable them to understand the likely benefits and risks associated with various aspects of pregnancy, birth and parenting so that they can make genuinely informed choices. This type of independent and critical information is not always available from maternity hospitals or care providers.
The ongoing feedback that we receive from people attending our meetings and seminars, and receiving our newsletters, shows that we are inspiring people by sharing birth stories and providing books, videos and other support materials about birthing matters and current issues. This often helps to dispel much of the fear about birth that can erode people's confidence and will help them to experience birth as a joyous life-giving event. We also refer people to resources that many people have found helpful. See birth information for a more detailed list of what we can help you with.
You can access this information by coming along to one of our regular meetings or special events, and by talking to us, or by subscribing to our quarterly newsletter and borrowing books, DVDs and videos from our library. Alternatively, contact us to find out more about us or discuss any queries you may have.
Birth Matters also has a more public role. We respond to media and political issues related to childbirth to ensure that recommendations from the World Health Organisation and other best practice evidence on pregnancy and birthing care are implemented in South Australia. We also work to change the community's perception of birth from a fearful and painful experience to one of satisfaction, empowerment and joy. You can read more about us under "Our Philosophy".
