Midwives and Midwifery Services in South Australia

Midwives in South Australia may work in public hospitals, private hospitals or independently (in private practice). The scope of their work may vary widely from one individual to another, from one workplace to another, and depending on whether they are attending birth in hospital or at home. Click here for details of private health insurers reimbursing for midwifery and homebirth services.

We have also listed below places where you may be able to access midwifery-led care other than at home. However, please note that although this type of care has been shown to lead to lower need for medical intervention and to result in higher levels of natural birth and waterbirth, places are still limited either by numbers of women per year or by whether you live within the service's catchment area. Please email webmatron@sabirthmatters.org.au if you are able to provide updates to the information provided here, or if you have any queries.

INDEPENDENT MIDWIVES in South Australia are listed below. They may be available to birth at home and/or in hospital with you. Not all midwives will be available at the time your baby is due; some are willing to travel considerable distances across Adelaide or outside the Metro area to birth with women but others practice more locally. You may want to speak to several midwives before you make your choice. Attending Birth Matters meetings is also a good way to meet local midwives. Click here for information on particular benefits of employing your own midwife.
