SACAS Home Page Picture

This months home page picture is a reference to the fact that SACAS is coming up to four years of operation.  The birth of SACAS is generally seen as the date of its first official function.  This was the 2004 SACAS Christmas Picnic and the large attendance demonstrated that a support group was not only viable - it was essential.  You can read more about the origins of SACAS on our history page and for those new to SACAS this brief history may put into context why SACAS is the organisation that it currently is.

24 September 2008 - SACAS Vice President Visits Government House

Nigel Holden, Vice President SACAS, was honored to attend Government House for a Reception to celebrate the OzAsia Festival 2008.  Nigel has been involved in the parade since its inception in 2007 and has been instrumental in ensuring that the whole inter-country adoption community can take part in this cultural event.  The importance of an event like the Moon Festival cannot be overstated.  Not only does it provide an opportunity for our children to celebrate their birth culture, it does so in a way that normalizes the activity.  Let's face it.....10,000 Adelaideans attend this event to celebrate Australian and Asian cultures.  We look forward to a long involvement with the Moon Lantern Parade in the years to come.

20 September 2008 - OzAsia Symposium Moon Lantern Festival

Mark Stewart, President SACAS, and Nigel Holden, Vice President SACAS, attended the OzAsia Symposium to hear various speakers address issues of Asian-Australian interest.  Mike Rann, Premier of SA, began by introducing Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister of Australia, in somewhat rehearsed Mandarin.  Mr Rudd later joked that Mr Rann was speaking a little known dialect and had mistakenly announced that we would soon see the Prime Minister's "large nose and exploding ears".  The Prime Minister then spoke seriously of the need to engage with Asia in the coming years and of the many mutual benefits of doing so.  The Lieutenant Governor of SA Mr Lei then reminded us all of a little known fact.  That the famous Colonel Light who designed our fair city was in fact of Anglo-Asian descent.  He went on to passionately applaud the current focus on an engagement with Asia and the contribution of Asian culture to Australia.  The symposium was an inspired way for ordinary South Australian's to share in the vision of our current political leaders.  It highlighted that the world our children will grow up in promises to be a very different one to that of previous generations of Asian adoptees.  This world will be one in which Asian and Australian cultures will become increasingly intertwined and appreciated for the strength and diversity that they bring to our lives.

14 September 2008 - Moon Lantern Festival

Well the weatherman got it wrong yet again!  There was no torrential rain or gale force winds in sight as the 2nd OzAsia Moon Lantern Festival was celebrated in Adelaide's Elder Park.  In fact it was quite a pleasant evening - if a little cold for this time of the year.  Attendance of the intercountry adoption community was down a little from last year - probably because of the unfavourable weather reports.  However those who attended appeared to have a great time with a wealth of Asian culture on display.  SACAS held a draw for a lucky family to march at the front of the intercountry adoption community.  This was won by a Korean contingent who were wearing some spectacular traditional Korean costumes.  Some amazing lanterns had been made by various schools and included a giant green frog, dolphins and a racing car driven by a teddy bear!  The shortened parade route and less time waiting in lines made for a much easier march than last year which was greatly appreciated by those of us with young children.  Some new friendships emerged between children and parents of different intercountry adoption communities - and this can only be a good thing for all concerned.  The Moon Festival is all about coming together and celebrating our differences and our similarities.  This annual event, launching the OzAsia Festival, is also a great opportunity to celebrate an ancient tradition in a modern context.  As the ancient Chinese saying goes "Under the full moon, mankind is one."  We thank those who participated in the march and attended in the crowd.  And we also thank the organisers of this fantastic event.
